The Customs and Traditions of the Mousadaghians

New Year in Mousa Dagh

At least one week prior to the New Year, the youth of the village would start gathering laurel branches. In the morning of December 31. At night they would all gather in the village square and make a big fire. Then, they would throw the laurel branches into the fire to burn, which would make cracking sounds and increase their excitement on the occasion. After the fire feast, they would visit the houses and gather treats or Christmas gifts.
On New Year's Eve, the youth would go around the village in groups carrying with them a bag tied with a rope. They would throw the bag inside each house expecting it to be filled with dried fruits made specially for the occasion.
